Windvines: Harvesting the Wind from Highway Traffic

Temporary installation for a 4Culture Public Art commission, Seattle, WA (I-5 and 65th Ave) 


This proposal drawing shows a field of wind turbines mounted onto the sides of the overpasses, which would power lights on the vines below. Pulses of light would descend down the vines from each turbine, varying in speed and intensity depending on the traffic & natural winds on the road above.


The images and video below show a test turbine that was mounted onto the overpass and successfully generated electricity using wind generated from the traffic above.
