Quarry Rings - Provides Bird & Bat Habitat in a new Seattle park (2010)

This new artwork is located inThomas Wales Park, a new park currently under construction on the site of an old gravel quarry on the west side of Lake Union. The quarrying left an amphitheater-shaped bowl that developed a small wetland at its center. 5 raised gabion rock rings reflect the site's past while also creating bird nesting habitat in the park. A variety of bird nests sites are integrated into rings to accommodate a variety of species. In addition, slots on the underside of the rings provide access to bat nest boxes incorporated into the rings

The artwork resonates with the gabion retaining walls and other gabion elements designed by Site Workshop, Landscape Architects.
